I complain a lot about my job. I started working as a nurse in the middle of the pandemic, and let’s just say it left me a bit jaded. But I heard that gratitude is pretty good medicine, so let’s give it a shot.

Here are 5 things I love about being a nurse.

  1. Wearing pajamas…I mean scrubs…to work. It takes me 5 minutes to get dressed in the morning. Literally 5 minutes. I love it.
  2. You can fart in your patients rooms. Bonus points if you do it while you’re cleaning up their poop, and blame it on them.
  3. Seeing new life come into the world. It’s literally a birthday party every day on the labor and delivery floor.
  4. Staying active. It’s really easy to stay fit when you’re on your feet all day, running from room to room and lifting patients for 12 hours.
  5. It’s easy to explain what I do to people. My dad had a really weird job growing up, and I never knew how to explain to people what he did. I would always default to “He’s a business man”. So I appreciate being able to sum up what I do in a few sentences, and generally people seem to respect it. Nursing is one of the most trusted professions, after all.
